AnCor & Co. Interview w/ Starr Nyce

anCor: What is your name, and where are you from?
Starr Nyce: Starr Nyce is the name I go by, born and raised in Lynchburg, VA but I currently reside in Atlanta.

anCor: How did you get the name “Starr Nyce”?
Starr Nyce: Just wanted to come up with something different that I wouldn’t have to worry about changing because of copy writes issues or whatever. So it’s “Starr” because I shine and I shine because I’m “Nyce”.

anCor: Is your family supportive of you being in the music industry?
Starr Nyce: Well my mother is an artist herself, she sings and acts so she knows the ups and downs of being an artist and has always been very supportive. My wife is supportive as well; she picked up and moved to ATL with me. But being that she isn’t an artist sometimes she doesn’t understand why I can’t turn my creativity off. (Laughs) So the support varies from person to person as far as how they show support…

anCor: Who do you believe is the hottest mainstream rap artist out right now, and why?
Starr Nyce: Kind of hard to just name one but I’m really digging Curren$y, Wiz Khalifa, Drake, Rick Ross and J. Cole right now. Oh and Starr Nyce is pretty dope too! (Laughs)

anCor: What do you feel the rap industry is missing right now?
Starr Nyce: Honesty, bottom line. That’s what music was initially founded on. People get so caught up in the way things sound, but they forget that great music is defined on how it makes you feel and your ability to relate.

anCor: Do you believe that Atlanta, GA is a great place to be if you are trying to grow in the music industry?
Starr Nyce: Yes definitely! I’ve learned so much about planning and things like that being here in Atlanta. I’ve seen people like B.o.B go from rocking the same showcases and venues; as I have to turning that fan base into a foundation for a movement. He had the number one song in the country with “Nothing On You”. Just like, the day after I moved here, I went to Lenox Mall and this guy came up to me with a CD and Walk Man trying to sell his CD. A year later or so later he was on my T.V. It was V.I.C. the cat who had that “Get Silly” record. So being here just lets me know that my dreams are in reach, I just have to apply myself and never let up!

anCor: What challenges do you face being an indie artist?
Starr Nyce: Everything is do it yourself; Everything we do is funded by Cat’s E.ntertainment Y.ou E.nvy. The saying it takes money to make money has never been so true! When you’re an artist you gotta come out of pocket for everything. I tell people all the time, if you want to make money and make money now. Fuck rapping; you have to supply people with a service. We flood the net and the streets with CD’s all the time, but people don’t understand work it takes to get that CD into their hands. You have to pay engineers to record, photographers for your pictures, graphic artists to make your covers, duplication companies to press them up, and in some cases DJ’s to break the records. That could easily cost you anywhere from $1,000 to $20,000. All of those services you go to them for their services and you paid for it. But everybody wants to rap?? (Laughs) It’s crazy; I do it because it’s what I love to do.

anCor: Do you use the same producer for all your projects?
Starr Nyce: Well DJ Terrorkane is the In-House Producer over here at Cat’s E.Y.E. Inc. and he has handled the bulk of my catalog. We just click when it comes to the music. But I do experiment with different producers from all over. I was a featured artist on my dude P.R’s “Pre-Heated Mixtape” hosted by Statik Selektah and P.R is form Sidney Australia. I’ve also worked with Big Fruit who did Cadillac Don & J Money’s “Peanut Butter & Jelly” and Bobby Valentino’s “Beep”. But we have a lot of talented producers in Va as well Earl B, Lakim, Dj Noyz, Charach, Terrorkane, Melodic, Mickie Beats, and Don Suave just to name a few.

anCor: You have completed three albums correct? Which album was your favorite and why?
Starr Nyce: I would have to say the first one which is “The One” because Terrorkane did most of the tracks so it all meshes together well as it goes from song to song. Just the overall feel of the album is hard it capture again. That’s not to say I’m not still making dope music (laughs) but that project was special. Google it the people can purchase it on CDBaby.com

anCor: Any upcoming events?
Starr Nyce: Nah no events as of yet, I’ve just been trying to get my songs in order for when I start hitting the stage hard again but Cat’s E.Y.E. Inc. is bringing DJ Ron G to Lynchburg, Va on August 14th and considering how we cross promote don’t be surprised; if I pop up with a mic in my hand. (Laughs)

anCor: Any words of wisdom?
Starr Nyce: All I want to say is stay true to yourself and true to what you do because people can feel when it’s not genuine! Look out for people who hold you down and try to have a decent work life balance. I understand the grind but your family and friends still need your love and support as well; And at the end of the day if whatever you’re trying to pursue falls through they’re the ones who are going to be there for you.

Shout Outs: Cat for always holding me down, Cat’s E.Y.E. Inc., DJ Terrorkane, VIRGINIA, my wife Courtney, my daughter Madisen, all my family and everybody who shows love and supports what we got going on over here!
